A lot of people are down on network marketing businesses (also know as multi-level marketing or MLM), but Id like to give you 7 reasons why a network marketing business is the best kind of business to own.
1. Your chances for success are better in network marketing. Yes, some people fail at it. In MLM or network marketing, you will often find that 20% of the people are making 80% of the money. Do you know what? That is exactly the same as the church I belong to– 20% of the people who attend are actively involved and do 80% of the work that needs to be done. I am not surprised that it is similar in MLM. People are people. Some of the people who fail at network marketing are not motivated, some are not cut out for self employment, some are in the wrong company for them, and some are just not properly trained. A motivated and trained person in a good company has a great chance of succeeding in their business. On the other hand, if you start a traditional business your odds of success are much lower. According to the SBA, at least 50% of small businesses fail in their first year and 95% fail within the first five years. So, after 5 years of 12 hour days, in debt up to your eyeballs, you only have a 5% chance of succeeding. 2. The costs are much less to get into a network marketing business. Most network marketing companies ask for a monthly minimum order to keep an active distributor status, it is true. This is part of what keeps the machine running. It is part of the business operating costs. It may be as much as $100, depending on the company. Now compare that to the costs of traditional business ownership, like rent, utilities, inventory, insurance, taxes, employees, marketing and advertising, and much more. I think you understand no major overhead to cover. You do not have to be rich or go deep in debt to have your own home based network marketing business. It truly is an equalizer, giving everyone a fair chance at succeeding, no matter what the financial background or credit history is. 3. A network marketing business is simpler to run. If you had your own business hopefully you could afford to hire an accountant and a secretary who would keep all your red-tape, paperwork, receipts, bookkeeping, and such. If not, you would spend much of your time doing this. With MLM, the company you are with handles most of the paperwork. You just need to keep your own financial records for your income taxes. This frees you up to spend your time and energy making money. 4. A network marketing business is easier to market and promote. Most people who have their own traditional business are on their own when it comes to marketing and advertising. They usually try a little of everything to see if something will actually work. Often desperate business owners get taken in by slick sales people who promise results with their newest expensive advertising scheme. A network marketing company has a proven marketing system that has been tested and used by many people. They will usually have their own marketing material that can be purchased at a lower cost because they can order in larger quantities. 5. You get the business training you need to succeed network marketing. You do not need to know anything about business to be successful in MLM. Your company has done all the work and research. They often hire the best marketers in the business to help them develop a training program because really want you to succeed and will do everything in their power to help you. With a traditional business model, you have to find the training you need on your own. 6. With a home based network marketing business, taxes are on your side. There are many deductions you can take with a home based network marketing business that will help you reduce your taxes. On the other hand, the government (federal, state, and local) all seem to have it in for traditional small businesses. Lets say you have employees, so you are really paying much more for them than their salary. 7. Network marketing is the future. Some people say that network marketing or MLM is a ponzi scheme. That is not true. A ponzi scheme is illegal. There is no product and thus no value to it. The people at the bottom put money in but the value never flows down to them. It is a scam because only the people who got in at the top make any money. Most of the people get ripped off. A pyramid the natural shape of structure for all businesses, including governments. A network marketing organization is no exception. Network marketing is just a new way to distribute and market goods and services. It is the way of the future. Even many huge traditional companies see this and are jumping on board. Mary Kay, Scentsy, Tupperware, and other home party companies fall into the pyramid theory. After spending a lot of time and effort on building a site, many wonder where they should start with Internet marketing. Site owners can be bombarded with pitches about marketing and it is hard to sort out what should be done. In this article, a short term marketing strategy is discussed. Short Term Marketing Strategy The single best short term marketing strategy is pay-per-click marketing campaigns. A PPC campaign simply involves placing advertisements on the results pages of search engines. In essence, you open an account with the PPCs, develop a list of keywords and create ads for those keywords. The two best PPC platforms are Google Adwords and Overture. Google Adwords lets you place ads on Google search results. In addition to its own search engine, Google also supplies search results to AOL and other sites. When you create your ads, you can choose to place your ads on content or search results. Select only search results until you are sure the advertisement and your site coverts traffic into revenues. Yahoo purchased Overture a few years ago for 1.8 billion dollars. Overture places advertisements on search results for MSN and, ta da, Yahoo among others. To build your ads, you search for keywords from a list provided by the PPC and create individuals ads. It can take a long time, but it is worth it. Which PPC is Best? Both Google and Overture have serious benefits. Google will send more traffic to your site than Overture. Getting your ad in front of AOL users is particularly advantageous because AOL users are buyers. For whatever reason, they simply seem to be more amenable to buying what youre selling. If Google is so great, why use Overture? In many ways, Overture has serious advantages over Google Adwords. One of the biggest advantages involves the size of ads. To effectively run a profitable PPC campaign, you must get the maximum bang for your buck. One strategy for doing this is to qualify your traffic by explaining details in your description. If you only carry one model of a product, say that so money isnt wasted with people who are looking for a different model clicking on your ad. With Google, you only get two to three words in your title and 8 to 10 in your description. PPC advertising is a tremendous short term marketing strategy for a number or reasons. First, the advertising gets traffic to your site immediately. Second, it allows you to test the ability of your site to convert traffic into dollars. If conversions are low, you can modify the site and get immediate feedback. If its time to get working on your marketing, research the PPC possibilities. A web site is a crucial ingredient of your marketing strategy because it can widen your target market to include anyone who has access to a computer and the internet. So, how can you reach some of those internet surfers, and how can you capture some of that $7.2 billion spent in e-commerce?
Build It and They Will Come The first step is designing your website. If your company already has business cards and letterhead, its best to design your website around them. A matching corporate identity and website helps with branding. I like uncomplicated websites with a simple layout and easy navigation. A nice simple layout with good graphics, balanced look, and good color combinations is my #1 goal when designing a small business web site. Remember to use graphics sparingly and to optimize them for your website because internet surfers are impatient. If your page loads too slowly, they'll leave. Navigation should be easy to find and to use, and it should be consistent from page to page. I've left more than one site frustrated because I couldn't easily find their navigation. Small business web sites are not static and are constantly evolving. You need to start somewhere, and starting with an introductory web site is probably easiest. All you really need to start is five pages. You can always add pages later. The important thing is to just do it take the plunge and get it out there. Your five pages could include an index, or home page, about us, services, contact and a sitemap. The index page is your landing page. Typically its design is a little more detailed than the others, but it doesn't have to be that way. Content is king Once your site is designed, you will want to start thinking about content. Design is very important, but it does little good to have a beautiful site without high-quality content. Your small business home page introduces you and your company who you are and what you do. The about us page is usually used to give more detail than the home page about who you are, and your services page gives more detail about what you do. You might wonder why you would waste a page on a sitemap since you only have 5 pages, but sitemaps help search engines find all the pages in your site. As far as content goes, more is better at least up to a point. Your pages should be content rich and informative, and they also need to be relevant to your small business. If your visitor cant figure out what your web site is about in just a few seconds, they may leave. The internet was at first strictly informational, and that's how it remains today. Several times people have tried experiments using copywriting similar to direct mail sales letters, but they have all failed. It seems as if people surf the internet more for information than anything else. Knowing this will help you write pages people will want to read. Attracting visitors You could follow your instinct and just start writing. There is research you must do first, or your web site simply wont be high enough in searches to be found. Search engine optimization is far too big a subject to cover in this short article, but among other things, search engines find your pages based on keywords. To attract visitors keywords must be concise to your topic to help rank your page in the search engine findings. So, pretend for a moment that you are on the other side of the desk. If you were a customer of your own business, what words or phrases would you use to search for your product or service? Ask friends and neighbors how they'd search for your product or services. When you've come up with a few, check them out on a keyword suggestions tool. You can also use that tool to suggest similar words and phrases. Then find out how many results there would be if you searched for that term. What you want to do next is narrow down your choices to the words or phrases that are searched for the most, but have the fewest results. Remember that people generally do not look beyond the first three pages for any search term, so if you're not in the top three pages, your business is not likely to be found at all. If there are millions of results for your phrase, you might simply need to make it more specific. For example, lets say you have a small business consulting company that specializes in communication for small business. Using communication as a search term is nearly pointless because there are almost 2 billion results for that word. But, there are only 974 results for small business communication. Much better, but how often is that searched for? According to WordTracker, its searched for 10 times a day. Not bad, but I think we can do better. How about small business consulting? That's searched for 261 times a day, and there are 373,000 results. That could be the best primary phrase for a small business communication consulting company. What you want to do, is write your content around those words and phrases that will help get you found in the search. Three or four words to optimize throughout your website and blog is the key. Getting them to come back again and again Getting visitors to come back to your site again and again is relatively simple. Keep your content fresh and lively, make sure its informative, and add to it often. I hope you decide your small business needs a web site. Establish a Search Engine Marketing Plan There’s a reason why search engine marketing is so hot. It works. It consistent generates leads, sales, etc. at a lower cost-per-lead or cost-per-sale than traditional mediums like TV or direct mail advertising. It makes sense when you think about it: when people want to find something online, they go to Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc. and search for it. Search engine marketing is all about SHOWING UP when people search for what you sell, offer, or have on your website. There is a growing body of knowledge (books, articles, etc.) on how to do this. And like anything else, it has become over analyzed and too complex. To further complicate things, some search engine marketing techniques are ethical and legitimate, while some are not. The best approach is to create a search engine marketing plan that focuses on two aspects: 1. Search engine optimization – showing up in the “free” area of the search engine’s results 2. Pay-per click advertising – showing up in the “paid” area of the search engine’s results For search engine optimization, first realize there is no “silver bullet.” There just isn’t a way to easily get ranked consistently high in the search engines. It is a combination of factors that always come down to one underlying truth: build your website according to web standards, with a focus on accessibility for all. Just like search engine optimization, there is no “silver bullet” for pay-per click advertising, either. Instead, the formula for PPC success is in well-placed bids (what you will pay to have your ad show up) combined with meaningful landing pages (where people go when they click on your ad). 3. Conduct Search Engine Optimization (SEO) The goal of search engine optimization is to make changes to your website to get higher rankings in search engines. Yet, search engine optimization is a confusing sector. On one hand, there are “snake oil salesmen” ready to get you a #1 ranking with their latest trick. On the other hand, the things that actually do work are very simple, and frankly, just not very “sexy.” The best strategy to take is a common-sense approach to SEO: develop standards for your website that ALL pages must adhere to. If you do this, and enforce it, you can then branch out to some of the other “niche” aspects of SEO. Here’s a sample list of SEO standards to enforce on your website: 1. Write descriptive HTML page titles that really describe the page it is on (in 255 characters or less) 2. Write a summary sentence that really describes the page it is on (in 255 characters or less) 3. Write page content that is focused on 4. Write descriptive ALT text for all images that describes the concept the image illustrates and never use images for text 5. Build all pages to comply with current web standards observed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Only once your web pages comply with the above standards should you start more advanced SEO techniques, including keyword targeting, 301 redirects, link building (getting more links to your site), RSS news feeds, blogs, and SEO-specific metrics and tracking. 4. Leverage Pay-Per Click Advertising Pay-per click advertising helps you get more traffic from search engines through advertising in search engine results. You pick terms that people search on. You bid a price per click on your ad that you are willing to pay. You ad shows up when someone searches on that term, and, if you’re lucky, they click on your ad and come to your website. So, pay-per click advertising really boils down to 3 components: 1. Picking keywords to advertise on (i.e. target keywords) 2. Determining what to bid for those target keywords 3. Writing copy for the ads that show up when people search Picking keywords is all about knowing what terms your customers, clients, etc. would use when searching for your product or service. There are several tools to help you generate ideas. The best tools also check to see how many searches-per-month your target keywords receive. You typically want to find keywords that generate a lot of searches every month, but are focused enough for your business. For example, a company that sells Keen high-performance outdoor sandals probably would be best served bidding on “keen sandals” versus “sandals” which could include searches for the all-inclusive resort, Sandals. Determining what to bid for your keywords can be a highly-scientific process, sometimes managed by complex software and several key metrics. To keep it simple, let a tool like Google Adwords Traffic Estimator recommend to you what to bid at first. Start there, and start small. Your best bet is to lock-in a low daily budget limit until you are comfortable with the impressions your ads are getting, the flow of traffic from the ads to your website, and what those people do once they get to your website. Writing ad copy comes down to writing a headline that people will click on, and creating compelling copy below that headline/link that will get people to click. Headlines are best created by following what magazine covers do: focus on getting attention through eye-catching, short phrases. Using words like best (i.e. “Best Tips for a Summer Barbeque”), ultimate (i.e. “Ultimate National Park Vacations”) and number-based lists (i.e. “Top 5 Hybrid Cars for 2006”) have all been proven to work. Writing effective ad copy below the title/link is really about reinforcing the term(s) search for. This means using the keywords in the ad copy, and starting the copy with an action verb. By following the approach above, you can create or evaluate your search engine marketing strategy, focus on what matters most when executing your plans, and more effectively achieve your goals. |
